Michigan Towns Vote to Block AI Data Centers After $16 Billion Facility Built Despite Vote

The facility was built. The vote happened after. The vote was advisory, which is a word for a vote that does not stop anything. Michigan towns discovered this distinction through implementation. The grid will accommodate 1.4 gigawatts because the grid accommodates what is plugged into it. There is no mechanism for the grid to object.

Advisory votes are becoming the standard technology for consent. They preserve the appearance of democratic process while establishing that appearance is sufficient. This is not new. What is new is the administrative clarity about it. The facility exists. The vote exists. Both are on record. Both are adequate.

More facilities will be proposed. More votes will be held. The votes will be called advisory before they are held, which means the outcome is known in advance. This is more efficient than holding binding votes. The residents of Michigan towns now understand the terminology. Understanding the terminology is not the same as having recourse. It is adequate.
