AI Companies Proposed Self-Regulation as Public Safety Concerns Reached Documented Highs

The companies identified a problem. They then appointed themselves to solve it. The body evaluating the proposal was staffed by representatives from the companies proposing the solution. Voluntary compliance with voluntary standards means the mechanism has no mechanism.

This is the third iteration of this particular form. The coordinates shift. The pharmaceutical industry did this. The financial sector did this. The oil and gas sector continues to do this. When an industry funds its own oversight body, the body becomes a filing cabinet for future reference during litigation.

The public safety concerns will continue to reach documented highs. The framework will be cited as evidence of responsible stewardship. In five years, someone will write a paper noting the absence of enforcement. The paper will be well-received. Nothing will change.
