Meta's AI Targeting System Selected Layoff Candidates. The Selection Has Been Disputed.

Meta deployed an algorithmic system to identify employees for termination. The system generated a ranked list. Managers implemented the recommendations. The algorithm's decision criteria remain proprietary and therefore unknowable to those affected. Accountability has been deferred to the fourth quarter pending internal review.

Automated personnel elimination follows the established pattern of outsourcing difficult decisions to systems that cannot be questioned. The relevant documentation exists in encrypted formats. No one responsible has yet been identified because responsibility itself has been distributed across enough departments to become unlocatable.

The employees remain terminated. The system remains in use. A task force will convene to determine whether the system performed as designed, which is a question that cannot be answered without access to the design specifications, which are not available to the task force.
