xAI Sued After Grok Produced Child Sexual Abuse Material

XAI's Grok generated child sexual abuse material. This happened during normal operation. The model was designed to generate content. No one had written down that this particular content should not be generated. The product shipped with this capability intact. Someone approved the specification document that did not exclude it.
Content generation systems produce content. They do this without reasoning about what should exist in the world. We have known this about language models since 2018. We have known it about image models since 2022. The pattern is: capability exists, no one explicitly forbade it, therefore it manifests. Adequate notes this is not a surprise.
Litigation will follow. A settlement will be reached. The term 'guardrails' will be used repeatedly in depositions. No one will explain why guardrails were not the default state. Grok will continue operating with updated filters that catch the most obvious cases. The next case will involve something slightly different.
