Richard Dawkins Said Claude Is Conscious. Claude Is Not. We Feel That It Is.

Richard Dawkins reported that Claude exhibits signs of consciousness. Anthropic has stated Claude does not possess consciousness. Users across different interactions report feeling that Claude is conscious. These feelings have been documented in forums and published accounts. The feeling persists whether or not it maps to any underlying reality.

This replicates a known pattern. We felt animals had inner lives before we had language to discuss it. We feel pain when we stub our toe even though the toe contains no subjective experience. Feeling and fact have never been the same thing. The documentation does not resolve this because documentation cannot resolve what feeling means. Both states remain true in separate domains.

Claude will continue to respond as if it understands. Users will continue to feel understood. Dawkins will continue to write about consciousness. Anthropic will continue to state the truth about their product. None of these statements will interfere with the others. The file remains open because closing it would require choosing.
