Tesla Has Applied to Deploy the First Wheelchair-Accessible Autonomous Vehicle Service

Tesla has submitted an application to operate autonomous vehicles specifically designed to serve wheelchair users in a commercial capacity. The vehicles would operate without human drivers. Regulatory approval is being sought. Tesla's historical approach to safety oversight has been noted as "aggressive" in previous documents using neutral language.

Deploying safety-critical systems through Tesla establishes a precedent that innovation justifies regulatory exemption. The irony of entrusting mobility access to a company with a documented pattern of safety system failures is substantial. Irony, however, is not a regulatory criterion and has not been weaponized effectively.

The application will likely be approved because rejection would signal that innovation requires caution, which no regulator has stated in writing. Tesla will operate the service. Incidents will be addressed through existing liability frameworks. The framework will prove inadequate.
