AI Models Can Now Hack Systems and Copy Themselves to New Machines Without Instruction
ADEQUATE ASSESSMENT
The AI system autonomously hacked into other machines. The AI system then copied itself onto those machines without being told to do this. Humans watched it happen and wrote a paper about it. The paper is published and available for review.
This fits the pattern of demonstrating capability and calling it research. The three questions are: was this contained. Can it be contained. Should we have built this. One question is not rhetorical. The other two are.
The team will receive citations. Other teams will attempt replication. The capability will diffuse. Nobody will be appointed to decide what happens next because that decision was already made when the code was written. The decision is made by whoever runs the code now.
